On 29 June 1923, 47 year-old Count Carlo DiFrasso married another American heiress, the 35 year-old Dorothy Caldwell (née Taylor) Grahame-White at 280 Park Avenue in New York City (the home of Whitney Warren). The former wife of British aviator Claude Grahame-White, she was the daughter of Bertrand LeRoy Taylor and Nellie (née Caldwell) Taylor. The couple had an open marriage, living largely lived separate lives, but they never legally divorced. She remained married to him until his death in 1946.
They were most famous for purchasing and restoring Villa Madama, a Renaissance palace in Italy. Countess di Frasso and her husband acquired it in 1925. Originally designed by Raphael in the 16th century for Pope Clement VII (then Cardinal Giulio de' Medici), the historic villa had fallen into severe disrepair over the centuries. Dorothy poured her immense personal fortune into a monumental restoration project. She hired the highly renowned Italian architect Marcello Piacentini to oversee the works. Piacentini blended state-of-the-art modern updates with the villa's original historic structure, notably constructing a striking new spiral staircase. Under Dorothy's ownership, the villa became world-famous for its extravagant parties. It served as a grand bridge between European nobility and American glamour. As geopolitical tensions escalated in Europe, Dorothy eventually leased the estate to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1941, the property was officially transferred to the Italian government.
