Edward Marcus Despard (1751 – 21 February 1803) was an Irish officer in the service of the British Crown who gained notoriety as a colonial administrator who favoured the rights of freed slaves and, following his recall to London, as a revolutionary conspirator. His associations with the London Corresponding Society, the United Irishmen and a militant conclave styling themselves United Britons brought him under government surveillance. In 1803 he was tried and executed for planning, in the so-called "Despard Plot", to seize the Tower of London and assassinate the King.
