Owen, who began his career as a stage actor, appeared in approximately 145 films. Many were uncredited. Owen appeared in several Humphrey Bogart movies, including Bullets or Ballots (1936) as the mobster spotter, San Quentin (1937) as inmate Dopey, The Wagons Roll At Night (1941) and High Sierra (1941).

Owen, a native of Brookhaven, Mississippi, died in Hollywood, California. Two films, one in 1951 and two others, were postumously released in theaters.

Garry Owen was a notable character actor from 1933 to the early 1950s. He died of a heart attack on June 1,1951 at the age of 49. His remains were cremated and the ashes stored at Chapel of the Pines crematory-columbarium in Los Angeles.
