Details
Giishkitawag (lit. 'Cut-ear'), whose English name was Joe White, was chief (Ojibwe: ogimaa) of the Prairie Rice Lake band of Ojibwe in northern Wisconsin from 1877 until his murder in 1894. His murder by law enforcement officers and the subsequent acquittal of his killers is remembered as an example of the state of Wisconsin's violation of treaty rights and persecution of Ojibwe.
