Emma Rowena Gatewood, known as Grandma Gatewood, (October 25, 1887–June 4, 1973), was a U.S. based extreme hiker and ultra-light hiking pioneer who was the first woman to hike the 2,168-mile (3,489 km) Appalachian Trail solo and in one season, in 1955. After this feat, she continued to forge new fronts in the hiking world and became the first person to hike the Appalachian National Trail (also known as the A.T.) three times, with her last venture completed in 1963 at age 75.
