Ashby married Shirley Citron in Las Vegas on July 31, 1963 after meeting her the previous year. She was pregnant with another man's baby, and he raised the daughter as his own. Ashby was not around much due to his workaholic tendencies, and he became incensed that Shirley was draining his bank accounts. Despite this, they adopted a son, Steven - although the marriage broke up shortly afterward.
