Couple is probably best known by many for accompanying President Abraham Lincoln and his wife to see "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater on the night of April 14, 1865. During the performance, John Wilkes Booth assassinated the President. Henry was injured by Booth, when he tried to stop the actor turn assassins from escaping. The couple married two years later, but the toll of the President's murder had left both of them physically and emotionally scarred. Henry's mental health and his sanity began to deteriorate.
In 1882, Henry accepted a position as the US Consul for the German Province of Hanover and the family moved to Germany. On December 23, 1883, Henry finally snapped and murdered Clara, he was arrested and sent to an insane asylum, where he died in 1911. He was buried next to Clara.
In 1952, due to Germany's cemetery policy and a lack of visitors to their graves, their bodies were disinterred and destroyed.
