Ivan Stepanovich Maleshoff (1895–1935), known as the Bluebeard of Kharkiv, was a Soviet-Ukrainian serial killer. After murdering his final victim, a former detective noticed him rubbing his snowshoes to remove blood from them, which led to his arrest. Maleshoff was convicted of murdering 20 women over the span of 12 months between 1934 and 1935. However, since murder is not typically a capital offense in Russia, Maleshoff was instead sentenced to death for anti-social banditry. In 1935, Maleshoff was executed in 1935 by firing squad at the age of 40. Prior to his execution, he confessed and plead guilty to 30 additional murders nearby in Kyiv during 1934.
