Jay writes in his autobiography that he was asked as a young publicist, to escort female clients to events if they needed dates. He was once assigned to Jayne Mansfield, who became incensed when he turned down spending the night with her (he was living with actress Leslie Parrish at the time). She continually requested him as an escort, causing problems in his relationship, until one night she tricked him into coming over and basically forced herself on him (his description and perspective). In response to that, he left his publicity firm Rogers & Cowan and started his own publicity firm.
