She was best known for her novel Ko Méri, or, A Cycle of Cathay: A Story of New Zealand Life (also known as Ko Meri), published in 1890. The novel formed part of what was termed the Maoriland movement in New Zealand literature. She spent the rest of her life living in the United Kingdom, where she wrote articles promoting imperialism for British newspapers and magazines, and published a collection of essays called Imperialism (1898) under her pseudonym C. de Thierry.
