John Morton Coles, FBA, FSA HonFSAScot (25 March 1930 – 14 October 2020) was an historian and academic. He was Professor of European Prehistory at the University of Cambridge from 1980 to 1986 and was a fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge from 1963 until his death. Coles completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and a PhD at the University of Edinburgh, where he was a research fellow (1959–60) before moving to the University of Cambridge as an assistant lecturer in 1960; he was promoted to a full lectureship in 1965 and a readership in 1976.
