John Edward McCarthy (June 21, 1930 – August 18, 2018) was an American Roman Catholic bishop; he was the third Roman Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Austin (1985–2001). His leadership helped enable the U.S. Catholic church to address the challenge of systemic poverty. His life of service in the Catholic Church was characterized as one of justice, equality and inclusion.
