John Ryan (cartoonist) dating history

Sad to see the death of Ryan. I wanted to be a cartoonist since I was a kid. In the 60s I showed a folio of work to a Fleet St cartoon agent. He said my stuff was crap. My world fell apart. But it was lunchtime and I looked across the road at the Catholic Herald offices. I went in. There was no one around except a girl eating her sandwiches. I asked her if someone would take a look. She said leave them there. I returned, expecting them to be still lying there. But the girl said: the Editor and Publisher wanted to see me. I went in and they signed me up as resident cartoonist for sister paper Glasgow Observer. In the space of an hour and a half, I was crap one minute and sliced bread the next.
