John William Ward (1922–1985), was a professor of English and history at Princeton University from 1952 to 1964 and a Professor of History and American Studies at Amherst College from 1964 to 1971. In 1971, Ward became the fourteenth President of Amherst College, a position he held until 1979.
Ward sparked controversy less than one year after his inauguration as President by protesting the war in Vietnam through nonviolent civil disobedience at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts. He was married to Barbara Carnes Ward and had three sons named David, Christopher and Andrew.
