I grew up in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx in the 80's and 90's and remember when my neighborhood was controlled by Jorge Alberto Rodriguez and his squad. He was known as Cholito, but was like a ghost. Rarely seen in public. When he was in the area there was always a squad around him preventing anyone from getting near him. In those days, in the eyes of my young eyes, Cholito was like the President of the United States. I understand he committed crimes by importing multi metric ton levels of cocaine, but I recall how he took care of all of us who lived in the hood. If a family could not pay their rent or didn't have food in the house he would take care of it. My father became very sick once and my mother had no money or job to afford the $10,000 medical bill or to get the medicine he needed. Without requiring or later demanding anything from my parents Cholito had my father transfered to a much better hospital where he received the treatment he needed, and he paid for everything including for all medicines and he had our rent paid for until my father recovered and was able to support us. When ice cream trucks would drive down our streets they were not permitted to charge anyone for ice cream. His people would pay for everything. He may have been bad in the eyes of the police, but to some of us who grew up seeing what he did for us and for the people in need, he was and still remain a local celebrity.
