DETECTIVES investigating the death of Linda McCartney’s first husband are looking for evidence that he may have been murdered.
Joseph Melville See Jr., 62 — the inspiration for “Jo Jo” in the Beatles classic “Get Back” — was found dead at his home in Tucson, Ariz., a month ago.
He had been shot once in the head and a gun was discovered nearby. Some signs point to suicide, but police have been slow to rule out a more sinister cause.
“This is still very much an open case,” said Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy Deanna Coultas. “Homicide detectives are still investigating, and we are awaiting the results.”
The county medical examiner’s office has also refused to give a final ruling on the case — despite what appears to be a suicide note.
Adding fuel to the murder theory was his reportedly rocky relationship with a longtime live-in girlfriend, Beverly Wilk, 54. They lived together for nearly 15 years, but friends have told police he had another girlfriend in Santa Fe, N.M., who he would visit regularly. Wilk discovered his body. Detectives interviewed her and friends say they believe he was about to end their relationship.
Hunting partner Michael Higgins told reporters: “Although they lived together, his relationship with Beverly was well and truly over.” She did not return calls.
