Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber met in 2009, through Bieber's manager Scooter Braun, who set their meeting by contacting Selena's mother and manager, Mandy Teefey. Bieber used to call Gomez his celebrity crush before they met and was looking forward to meet her. Back when they met, Selena had just broken up with Nick Jonas. They became close friends, and Gomez even used to call Justin her "little brother".
Their relationship took another step in late 2010, quickly after Bieber broke up with then girlfriend Jasmine Villegas and a few months after Gomez and Nick Jonas split for good. They were spotted together more often, Gomez attended Bieber's "My World Tour" concerts and they spent New Year's Eve together in the Caribbean, where they were pictured kissing at the pool.
Their relationship was made official on February 27, 2011, when they attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party as a couple. Bieber and Gomez's relationship was pretty exposed, unlike both past relationships. Also, Gomez received death threats from Bieber's fans.
Fallout rumors began in October 2012, when a source told Radar Online that their relationship was on the rocks, with sources claiming that jealousy was taking over their relationship and things were pretty tense between them. They previously faced breakup rumors throughout 2011, after a woman accused Bieber of being her child's father. After a paternity test was taken, it was proved to be a lie. In July 2012, it was once again rumored that they had broken up. However, none of it was proven and they were seen together afterwards.
On November 10, 2012, a source reported to PEOPLE that they were no longer together, "She broke up with him about a week ago. With them being apart so much it got complicated. She had some trust issues. It's not easy, but the relationship needed to end."
Hungarian model Barbara Palvin was rumored to be one of the reasons behind Bieber and Gomez's split. He performed at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on November 7, meanwhile Barbara was one of the Angels. They met there and he supposedly was flirting with her and other models backstage. One of these models was Miranda Kerr, who was married to Orlando Bloom at the time. Throughout December 2012, Bieber hung out with Palvin and Gomez even shared a picture of them together on her social media, using a series of full stops as a caption.
However, Bieber and Gomez seemingly got back together that same month, as they were seen leaving a romantic dinner together and also traveled to a double date in Park City, Utah, along with Selena's best friend Taylor Swift and Swift's then boyfriend and One Direction's member, Harry Styles.
In January 2013, it was reported that once again they had broken up. Bieber then released an acoustic version of his studio album "Believe" including a song "Nothing Like Us" that he later admitted to had been written about his relationship with Gomez.
In an exclusive interview to Billboard, he talked about his mood ever since his then latest split from Gomez, "I'm not in the happiest place that I've ever been. I'm trying to get through what I'm going through... [but] I have my really close friends to cheer me up and keep me going."
On March 18, 2013, during an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, Gomez admitted that she made Bieber cry.
"The last time he was on, he and I got into a conversation and he said something and then I said something and then he said something and then I said something and I made him cry," host Letterman said.
Gomez bursted out laughing before quipping, "Well then that makes two of us." She also revealed that she was doing good and was happily single.
They later briefly reconciled from April to July 2013. They bumped into each other at the BBMAs backstage on May 19, and Taylor Swift's reaction flamed rumors that she wasn't supportive of Bieber's relationship with her best friend anymore. Gomez later released her album "Stars Dance" including a song called "Love Will Remember" that was written about her relationship with Bieber. She even used one of Bieber's voicemails as the intro for the song.

However, she unfollowed both of them and deleted all pictures with them, as sources claimed she caught Bieber and Kylie Jenner "sexting" each other. In June 2014, it was confirmed they were back together.
Later on, Bieber got into a physical fight with British actor Orlando Bloom in Ibiza, igniting speculation that Gomez was at the root of their heated fight, as Gomez and Bloom had been spotted hanging out together earlier that year. In November 2014, Gomez made their breakup official by releasing a heartbreaking song called "The Heart Wants What It Wants". Later that month, she performed that song at the American Music Awards. This was the only time she publicly performed the song. At the end of her performance, Gomez broke down in tears. Soon afterwards, Bieber posted a quote on Instagram saying, "Sometimes love isn't a feeling, but a choice [...] it's easy to love when you feel it, but love when it's hard to love." He unfollowed her on social media a few weeks later and then was rumored to be dating model Hailey Baldwin.

He also revealed he wrote a song called "If I Would Have Met You In Five Years" that he was planning on putting on his album "Purpose", but then changed his mind at the very last minute.
On November 20, 2015, Bieber surprised Gomez in a hotel's bar in Beverly Hills by singing to her "My Girl" by The Temptations in front of everyone. They were filmed slow-dancing and then kissing before leaving the bar together. Days later, Gomez attended his AMA's after party and by early December 2015, they were seen hanging out together. However that same month, Bieber rekindled his then casual relationship with Hailey Baldwin and Gomez was spotted with fashion designer Samuel Krost. In February 2017, Canadian rapper and record producer NAV released a song called "Some Way" featuring The Weeknd, as the lead single from his self-titled debut commercial mixtape, in which The Weeknd dissed Bieber with NAV also taking a shot at him in his verse, "I think your girl, think your girl, fell in love with me/She say my f*** and my tongue game a remedy."
Months later, in September 2017, Gomez revealed on social media she's had a kidney transplant during the summer of 2017 due to her Lyme disease. Gomez allegedly got upset which led to a huge fight between them. They ended up going to couples' therapy to work through their issues. A couple of weeks later, they flew to Mexico to spend New Year's Eve together with some of their friends.
Later on, it was revealed Gomez was no longer talking to her mother, because she wasn't supportive of her daughter rekindling a relationship with Bieber. TMZ reported Gomez's family wasn't a fan of Bieber and thought Gomez deserved better. In February 2018, the pair spent Valentine's Day together. Later that month, Gomez was Bieber's date to his father's wedding in Jamaica. On March 1, 2018, Gomez made their relationship official by wishing him a happy birthday on Instagram.
However, only a week after confirming they were back together, it was reported they both decided to "take a break". According to TMZ, Bieber and Gomez had a few disagreements and a huge fight that influenced them on taking a break. In late March 2018, The Weeknd released an album titled "My Dear Melancholy" that was mostly inspired by his relationship with Gomez. In a song called "I Was Never There" he threw a shade at her for coming back to Bieber, "Now I know what love is/And I know it ain't you for sure/You'd rather something toxic."

The couple got engaged the following month and were legally married by September 2018. Few weeks after this interview, Gomez and Hailey Bieber took pictures together at the Academy Museum Gala, which set the records straight on how they feel about each other nowadays.
