He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied trumpet and keyboard. Whilst studying there he began a 'light orchestra' and a big band. He is described by himself and others as "one of the most experienced and innovative conductors of wind groups in the country".
