Liana Fiol Matta was the most junior Associate Justice of the Puerto Rico Supreme Court for over four years. Due to the retirement of two justices and the death of a third, in the following two years she became the most senior Justice on July 31, 2010. Appointed by Governor Sila Calderón in 2004 to succeed the court's first female Justice, her nomination was confirmed in a partisan vote by the Puerto Rico Senate and she was sworn in on February 19, 2004.
