She is known for her roles as Mrs Tembe in the BBC soap opera Doctors and Aggie Bailey in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street. For her role in Doctors, Laidlaw won the Royal Television Society award for Best Actress, as well as Best Daytime Star at the Inside Soap Awards.
