Lucinda Belknap Nye (c.1791–1888) represents an important yet frequently overlooked part of American abolitionism. Before the American Civil War in Zanesville, Ohio she was an advocate for the abolition of slavery and a leader in an antislavery society. Working alongside her husband, Horace Nye, Lucinda is believed to have provided assistance to escaped slaves. Lucinda taught at the Stone Academy as well, a known stop on the Underground Railroad. The Nye house is a historical landmark to this day in Zanesville. Lucindas potenital contributions within the Underground Railroad were done secret for her safety and her families safety leaving minimal accounts of her contributions.
