In 1963, at twenty-five, Lya married Celso Pedro Luft, then a Marist brother, nineteen years older than her. They met during a test exam, for which she had arrived late. She and her husband had three children: Susana (1965), Andrew (1966) and Eduardo (1969).
In 1985, Lya Luft annulled her marriage to Celso to live with the psychoanalyst and writer also Hélio Pellegrino, in Rio de Janeiro. They had been introduced to each other by Nelida Piñon. In 1992, four years after the death of Pellegrino, Lya returned to live with Celso Luft, who was widowed in 1995.
