María Viramontes is a member of the Richmond City Council. She was the Democratic Vice Mayor of the city of Richmond, California. She is both the first Latino person and woman to achieve reach this position. She was appointed by the city council. She was reelected in 2006 and is on the ballot for reelection in 2010.
