When Polly left the protection of the paternal home, it is likely she did so to take up with a man she had met. In March 1884, Thomas Stuart Drew, a blacksmith who lived on neighbouring York Street, had been widowed. Now alone in his late thirties and with three daughters to care for, his daughters would have required a mother and he offered Polly a settled home and an opportunity once more to feel of use in the roles of wife and mother.
On November 1886 they were separated due to her drinking habits.
