Massasoit Sachem
(MASS-ə-SOYT, -SOY-it) or Ousamequin (c. – 1661) was the sachem or leader of the Wampanoag confederacy. Massasoit means Great Sachem. Although Massasoit was only his title, English colonists mistook it as his name and it stuck.
