Details
Matthew of Ephesus (Greek: Ματθαῖος τῆς 'Εφέσου), also known as Manuel Gabalas (Greek: Μανουὴλ Γαβαλᾶς) or Matthew of Philadelphia (1272/3–1355/7), was a Byzantine Greek clergyman, writer and scholar. He was active in both theological and political life in Byzantium, serving as the metropolitan of Ephesus from 1329, until his excommunication in 1351, due to his anti-Palamite stance during the Hesychast controversy.
