Justin Christopher Hare (January 31, 1989 — March 15, 2024) was a New Mexico State Police officer that was shot while performing a welfare check on a stopped vehicle on Interstate 40, and would later die of his injuries. As Hare pulled up behind the stopped vehicle, a man named Jaremy Smith exited the vehicle and approached Hare's car. Smith was wanted by authorities for kidnapping and killing an off-duty paramedic on March 14. Smith shot Hare three times with a stolen handgun. He then entered the patrol car and drove away. He then stopped, pulled Hare out onto the ground, and then continued driving, eventually crashing in Guadalupe County and fleeing. After a two-day manhunt, Jaremy was found and arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
