Before Obed Simon Johnson's book, "A Study of Chinese Alchemy" most European writers gave credit for the origin of alchemy to Greeks in Egypt in the third century AD. Johnson showed that Alchemy started at least 500 years earlier in China. He was the first Westerner to recognize the ancient Chinese alchemists.
