Dmitri and Olga were cousins once removed as well as childhood playmates. A marriage between them would have been a good strategie since Olga`s brother, Alexei, heir to the throne, suffered from Hemophilia and could die at any time. If this happaned, and they were married, Dmitri could assume his rights to the throne.
A. Bogdanova, the wife of a general and hostess of a monarchist salon, wrote in her diary on June 7, 1912, that Olga had been betrothed the previous night to Dmitri, although this has never been confirmed. Some say that their marriage did not go foward due to Dmitri`s relationship with Prince Felix Yussupov and his dislike of Gregory Rasputin, a siberian mystic who is said to been able to cure Alexei during his illness.
