Leon Weston "Pete" Harman (January 16, 1919 – November 19, 2014) was an American businessman best known for having struck a deal with Colonel Harland Sanders[I am Jerry Shaw, I was young and I was with "Pete" in the early years, "Making a long story short" Pete paid Sanders $1,000 for the Fred Chicken Recipe. on August 23 1952 I was with my father in the "Do Drop In" restaurant at 39th South and State street SLC. Utah ,waiting for the sign painter Bob Anderson to come in and paint on the windows "Fried Chicken 7 days a week.". Anderson wonted more and after Pete told Anderson the story of paying $1,000 to Sanders from Kentucky, Anderson said call it Kentucky Fried Chicken. Owner of the name was Leon W. "Pete" Harman. Harman became the franchisor and the franchisee in Utah and other states. Sanders was in another state when it all started. Sanders was living on $105.00 Social Security and was bowing money from Pete and never paying it back. Pete asked as restaurant in Utah to changes their name and became a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and partner of Pete Harman to also to help Sanders who was living in his car, Pete set up a program to give Sanders 5 cents for every chicken a restaurant in Utah sold.
