The couple's relationship began in 2006, four years after the death of Leith's first husband, South African author Rayne Kruger.
They were together for four years, but had been business colleagues for 20 years beforehand.
Professional pianist Sir Ernest said they were 'like a couple of teenagers' when they first fell for each other, but their difference in character eventually meant things turned sour.
Leith's memoir described the difficulties of their relationship and even told readers how Sir Ernest, who was knighted in 1998, had bi-polar disorder.
He said her view of him was not something he gave much importance, but maintains he is still friends with the Bake Off judge and is 'very fond of her'.
The retired businessman also confessed he thinks her new husband, former clothes designer John Playfair, is far more suited to her.
