In 1962 he moved to Southern California to study at the Department of Cinematography at UCLA, where he first met fellow student and future partner Jim Morrison, along with Dorothy Fujikawa. He soon asked her out. Dorothy became his star and muse. Ray once said:
“I met Dorothy Fujikawa in an art class. I thought she was so interesting I married her. We’re still married.”
In 1965 they were living together.
“There would be no Doors if it wasn’t for Dorothy Fujikawa,” he has said many times over the years. “She was the one who supported Jim and me as we put the band together.”
While Ray was rehearsing with The Doors, Dorothy worked in the lab of a film company developing pictures, and supporting the struggling musicians.
They married at the Los Angeles courthouse, on December 21st, 1967 in presence of Ray's bandmate Jim Morrison and his long-time girlfriend Pam Courson.
Dorothy and Ray became parents of two sons, Pablo and Zia.
They are grandparents now of three children.
