In December 1963, DeKnight married jazz singer Sallie Blair in Honolulu where he was heading his own trio. DeKnight became a widower in February 1962 when his wife Freda passed away from cancer. DeKnight and Blair divorced at some point. He went on to marry a woman named Maria, and Blair dated Warren Beatty in the late 1970's.
