Salvatore "Sam" Maceo (March 1, 1894 – April 16, 1951) was an Italian-American businessman, power broker and crime boss in Galveston, Texas. During his reign as Galveston's undisputed kingpin, the city became a nationally known resort city, because of the gambling, prostitution and free flowing liquor, a period known as Galveston's Open Era. He and his brother, Rosario Maceo both of Sicilian origin, owned and managed numerous restaurants, casinos, brothels and speakeasys including the now-vanished Hollywood Dinner Club and the Balinese Room. Sometimes known as the "Velvet Glove," Sam's smooth style and ability to influence people were legendary. At the height of his power, he was able to control the local government, the tourist industry and organized crime in the city. He sometimes used election fraud to keep political allies in power. During his lifetime he and his island home were known nationwide.
