Shihan Shigeru Ishino was born in Japan in 1947 and began his martial arts instruction with Shinan Masayoshi Kori Hisataka in 1954 at the hombu dojo in Tokyo Japan. He was promoted to SHODAN (First Degree Black Belt) in 1959 and currently holds the rank of NANADAN (7th Degree Black Belt). He is a graduate of Nihon University in Tokyo Japan, and was All-Japan Shorinjiryu Karate Champion (1967) and Outstanding Karate Player of Japan (1968–1969). In the 1969, Kaiso Hisataka sent many of his outstanding students to North America to introduce Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karate. These students included his son, Shihan Masayuki Kukan Hisataka, Shihan Shunji Watanabe, Shihan Hisanobu Yamazaki and Shihan Shigeru Ishino. Kaiso Masayoshi Kori Hisataka died on August 14, 1988, leaving the Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karatedo school in the hands of his son. However, his legacy is also left in several other direct students still teaching, including Shihan Shunji Watanabe(Shorinjiryu Kenyukai Karate) and Shihan Shigeru Ishino (Shorinjiryu Genbukan Karatedo).
