Stephaton or (Steven) was the name given by tradition to the Roman soldier, unnamed in the Gospels, who offered Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar wine after Jesus cried out "I thirst" (John 19:28-30), and thus a subordinate of Longinus the centurion. It is not known when or how the name originated, well before the end of the first millennium.
