"During the 1970s and early ‘80s, Sterling appeared on the covers of magazines, modeled for Halston and Hubert de Givenchy. Givenchy was said to be Sterling’s lover who he resided with in a Swiss castle. He was also a regular dancer at Studio 54 which was co-owned by Steve Rubell who was a closeted homosexual and did of Aids in 1989." Pat Cleveland states in her autobiography that Sterling had a "long affair with the great designer Hubert De Givenchy, whose fragrances I can never smell without thinking of Stering."
