Howey was married to actress Sarah Shahi. The two became engaged in June 2007, while vacationing in Hawaii and married on February 7, 2009, in Las Vegas. On July 8, 2009, they had their first child, William Wolf Howey. Shahi gave birth during an at-home water birth. They welcomed their twins, daughter Violet Moon and son Knox Blue, on Sunday, March 1, 2015, at home in Los Angeles. They divorced in 2020.
