Ulzana (ca. 1821 - 1909, also known as Josanni, Jolsanie or Ozaní’ - ″Tanned buckskin″ or Bį-sópàn - ″Big Buckskin″), was a Tsokanende Apache war chief, brother of Chihuahua and, both the brothers, loyal and warlike supportersand leutenants of Cochise, best known for leading a raid in 1885 which inspired the film Ulzana's Raid (1972). Cochise's death (1874) originated the struggle for power between Tahazay (the eldest) and Naiche (the youngest), sons of the dead head chief, and their uncle Nahilzay (Cochise's second ranking chief and war chief of the Tsokanende), opposed to the brothers Chihuahua and Ulzana and to the brothers Skinya and Pionsenay, being the oldest brother, Skinya, killed by Naiche and the youngest one, Pionsenay, badly wounded by Tahzay. In Autumn 1885, Ulzana led a raid through Arizona and new Mexico, going to became legendary, with only 11 Mogollon warriors, riding 1200 miles, killing 36 Pindah and Mexican people, terrifying settlers, cow boys and miners, stealing stocks and making fun of 2000 soldiers, loosing only one warrior, killed by San Carlos Apache, and went safe to Mexico in the last days of december, having lost no more warriors after Fort Apache and having killed, within two monts, more than 40 enemies (perhaps 45) and having rided approximately 1900 km. (1200 miles). Ulzana surrendered, along with his brother Chihuahua and old Nana, on March 3rd 1886, when 77 Apache (15 warriors, 33 wimen and 29 children) made their entrance into Fort Bowie Restrained on the reservarion, Ulzana survived until 1909.
