A serial divorcee, Lorenzo Lamas' first marriage was to model Vicki Hilbert. She guest starred in an episode of Falcon's Crest. They rushed in and out of the marriage as they wedded in October 1981 and separated the following year. Upon finalizing their divorce in May 1983, Lamas wedded another actress, the late Michelle Smith.
Lamas's father and stepmother disapproved of his relationship with his first wife, Victoria Hilbert. Whenever he and his spouse visited the couple, Hilbert returned home crying and vented about her father-in-law. Lamas recalled her saying: 'Your dad is a male chauvinist. He has no respect for women. Esther's a doormat." Lamas admitted that he always defended his parent, telling Hilbert that if she tried to see things from his dad's perspective, she would know he was a good person. Meanwhile, his father and stepmother would also tell him what they thought about Hilbert. "'Victoria is using you. You have no business being with her,'" Lamas remembered, adding his dad always reminded him that Hilbert was 12 years older than him. He also suggested that he should have an affair instead of marrying her. But Lamas did the exact opposite of that. He married Hilbert in October 1981 in the coastal town of Carmel, where they exchanged wedding vows in a small chapel in Big Sur. The television star admitted: "In hindsight, knowing how much my father disapproved of her, she was right. I just did not see it back then." Even though the couple beat the odds, things fizzled out between them as time passed. Lamas revealed that after living apart for a while, he and Hilbert officially separated and filed for divorce right after. It was an amicable split, with Hillbert being civilized throughout the divorce proceedings. She did not want anything from Lamas and only wanted him to be happy. Still, she asked for financial support, and he gave her $20,000. Hilbert never asked for alimony, which Lamas said was "generous" of her. "She reminds me a lot of my mom. Mom would never ask for a dime, even if she never had money in the bank," he said. Lamas and Hilbert crossed paths in the 1981 soap opera, "Falcon Crest," wherein they played love interests. He portrayed the role of Lance Cumson, and the actress played his on-screen girlfriend. After only one year of marriage, the duo divorced in 1982.
