Eisenberg grew up in a suburb of Chicago, and came to New York in the late 1960s to study at the New School. She worked as a waitress and an assistant at a literary magazine, and met Wallace Shawn, the actor and playwright probably best known for his role as the hunchback Vizzini in The Princess Bride; they still live together. In the early 1980s, she and Shawn travelled to Nicaragua "to see where our tax dollars were going", and the couple have returned to Central America many times: to Honduras and to Guatemala, which she calls "the most fascinating place in the world".
