Details
Yao Yizhong (280–352), posthumously honored as Emperor Jingyuan, was a Qiang chieftain of Later Zhao during the Sixteen Kingdoms period and the Jin dynasty (266–420). He initially submitted to Liu Yao of Han Zhao, but following the state's destruction changed allegiance to Shi Le's Later Zhao. During the reign of Shi Hu, he was entrusted in protecting and controlling the Qiang people within Zhao's domain and in 349, he put down a major rebellion led by the guard leader, Liang Du. As Later Zhao began to fall apart due to Ran Min's war, Yao Yizhong sided with Shi Zhi but later submitted to the Jin dynasty in 351 after Shi Zhi's death. Yizhong would die the following year, and his fifth son Yao Xiang led his family and formally join Jin before becoming a competing warlord in the Central Plains. His twenty-fourth son, Yao Chang, would go on to establish the Later Qin state in 384.
