Romero formerly competed in the Middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he was a challenger for the UFC Middleweight Championship, in Bellator MMA where he was a challenger for the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Championship, and in Strikeforce.
