But if the picture has a Pop Art charm not quite in keeping with Ms. Hutton's off-road persona, it bears noting that she won it from the artist on a bet. She met Mr. Ruscha on the set of ''Welcome to L.A.,'' Alan Rudolph's 1977 film about a group of overnight celebrities. ''I don't remember exactly what the bet was about,'' Ms. Hutton said. ''I know it involved a giant clam.'' That's more like it. Furthermore, Mr. Ruscha said that the artwork, which he painted more than a decade after the bet -- one of a 1987 series of slogans across the Los Angeles backdrop -- was a kind of ode to Ms. Hutton, with whom he had an affair in the late 1970's before their relationship crystallized into friendship. ''That painting celebrates that meeting,'' he said. For Ms. Hutton, the painting reminds her of more naïve and optimistic days. ''For me, it's like all that early hope,'' she said. ''When love is young, you can change, you can get excited about different things.''
