Frances met the love of her life, Joel McCrea, on the set of the 1933 film The Silver Cord (1933). He had been smitten after seeing her in the movie An American Tragedy (1931) and requested that she be cast in his movie. They would also appear together in Wells Fargo (1937) and Four Faces West (1948).
In 1935 she and her husband Joel MCrea were separated, but soon reconciled. Joel McCrea filed for divorce in 1966, charging Frances with cruelty. But the couple stayed married until McCrea`s death.
