It is unknown when Taylor and Joe began dating, however Taylor was a regular at Jonas Brothers shoes by July 2008. Due to their rising fame and youth, their relationship was kept private and generally denied whenever asked.
Swift told MTV News of the relationship: “For me, in dealing with things that people write, I try not to let it affect my life... He’s an amazing guy, and anyone would be lucky to be dating him.”
But the pair split months later when Jonas reportedly left Swift for his “Lovebug” video co-star Camilla Belle, as detailed in “Better Than Revenge” on Swift’s third studio album “Speak Now”. Swift even went on Ellen to out her ex for breaking up with her in a “record” 27 second phone call.
It’s all good, though, because Swift says “I addressed it, and, you know, that’s a chapter in my life that’s closed now.”
And of course she got a song out of the relationship: “Forever & Always” from her second studio album “Fearless”. After the re-release of the album “Fearless” in 2009, Swift fans began speculating that she might have written “Jump Then Fall” and “Come in With the Rain” about her relationship with Jonas.
Over the course of her next 2 albums came more songs about the relationship. On her third studio album “Speak Now”, "Last Kiss”, “Haunted” and the diss song about Camila Belle forementioned “Better Than Revenge” in which she references Joe’s earlier song about her titled “Much Better”.
It is also rumored that “Holy Ground” from Swift’s fourth studio album “Red” could possibly be referencing the relationship.
As of 2015, Taylor and Joe have seemingly become close again platonically after Joe began dating Taylor’s friend, model Gigi Hadid. They have posed for several pictures together and seem to be part of each others “squad”.
It appears as though Taylor and Joe have remained amicable after Joe’s breakup with Gigi. They were seen hugging at Coachella in April 2016.
