Lili Erenyi (born 1909 in Budapest- died 2011 in Fleet, Hants, UK) fell in love with George Faludy when his translation of Villon was first published. There is no evidence they were lovers, but remained friends and found themselves in Paris when WW2 broke out. Although Lili married another Hungarian, Kalman, in order to have the safety of traveling with a man, both Lili and George ended up in Morocco. George continued to visit Lili, my mother's, Aurora's (nee Erenyi Hajnal, 1923, died 2015 in Devon, UK) eldest sister, in Morocco, where I was with them in the summer of 1964. Lili Kalman willingly funded many of George's travels. When George went to Malta, it was to be close to Lili's second (of four) sister, Klara Marsh (nee, Erenyi in Budapest, 1911, died 2004 in Farnham, Surrey, UK) who ran a successful art Gallery at the Bank of Alderney in Valetta. It was in Malta where I met George the second time, heard the news that Eric Johnson had been searching for and found him. Through my Aunt Klara I was introduced to George and Eric. Since I had the use of a vehicle, several times a week I drove them to an as yet uninhabited bay where we spent the days talking, floating on lie-lows, with picnic lunches and wine. Lili followed George and Eric to Toronto where she took out an apartment and socialized - not with George and Eric's community, but, rather, with Ibi Gabori's community. Ibi and George Gabori hosted George and Eric for several years. During those years, George Faludy secretly married Lili and she took on the name of Lilly Faludy. In the process Lilly gained British citizenship. Up to that point, ever since WW2, she had no citizenship at all, traveling with an assurance certificate that Morocco will allow her to return. She ran a successful business there, Moroccan Handwoven Arts and Crafts. With a diploma in dress design, Lili's weavers supplied the finest woollen carpets as dress and upholstery material to foreign tourists all over the world. Lily had retired from doing business just before her marriage to George. Not taking the extreme temperature changes of Toronto well, she went to live in Malaga, and as quietly as she and George were married, they divorced. At no time did they live together. Their 'marriage' was an act of friendship. Eric once remarked that that 'act of friendship' cost Lily an arm and a leg, and at one point Lili confirmed that the cost was more than she expected, but that it was necessary. I never heard the actual sum. Once George Faludy was invited back to Hungary, he and Lily never saw each other again, although my mother, Aurora and I kept visiting them from time to time. I last saw him at the Canadian Embassy in Budapest when he received the official honor from the city of Toronto for having a small park named after him across the street from his St. Mary Street apartment.
