Lane has received numerous awards, including three Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, an Olivier Award, and three Emmy Awards. Lane received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2010, The New York Times hailed Lane as "the greatest stage entertainer of the decade".
