He is most remembered for his roles as Norman in the 1967 biographical crime drama film Bonnie and Clyde, Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in the 1971 neo-noir action thriller film The French Connection and its 1975 sequel film The French Connection II, Lex Luthor in the 1978 superhero film Superman and its sequel films Superman II (1980) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), John Herod in the 1995 revisionist Western film The Quick and the Dead, Captain Franklin "Frank" Ramsey in the 1995 submarine action thriller film Crimson Tide, Harry Zimm in the 1995 gangster comedy-drama film Get Shorty, Edward "Brill" Lyle in the 1998 political action thriller film Enemy of the State.
