It has long been speculated on, just what caused her kidney failure, leading to her death from uremic poisoning. Many thought it was a beating across the kidneys by her husband, Paul Bern. Others said it was a botched abortion. I just recently read that jean suffered a bout with rheumatic fever when she was a child. It settled in her kidneys and this is what caused her premature death at 26.
